Welcome to Belper Arts Festival 2019.
In 2013 Croatia became the 28th member of the European Union and Prince George was born. ‘12 Years A Slave’ won the Oscar for Best Film. Chris Froome won the 100th Tour de France. Wigan Athletic won the FA Cup, Sheridan Smith won a Bafta and the first Belper Arts Festival took place. In the time since, the Festival has attracted over 100,000 visitors and it is estimated that it has contributed £1m to the local economy.
Run entirely by volunteers, Belper Arts Festival has helped put the town on the map and develop the artistic community and economy. A special thank you goes to all the event organisers and helpers, who, year after year, work tirelessly to make things happen. The 2019 Festival is the biggest yet. It has over 1000 participants taking part in over 50 events in more than 80 venues. The programme of events includes a genuine Broadway star, the Bard of Barnsley, a musical legend, star crossed lovers, enchanting woollen characters and …. well, read on and you will see how packed the month of May is in Belper.
This year the Festival has new initiatives including Access All Arts, Voices Of The Valley, Get Creative and the Short Play Festival alongside established favourites such as Woollen Woods, Open Houses Arts and the Arts Trail. Whilst as many events as possible are free, the Festival has added two new box offices. Time And Again on King St. and Derby Live join Oxfam Books and (online) belperartsfestival.org. It is worth pointing out that the brochure goes to press in mid February and events that come in after may not be featured. However belperartsfestival.org carries information on every event, especially the late comers.
Join us in Belper this May, you’ll be made very welcome.
